  • EMC2024 brings Microscopy and Imaging to Copenhagen
    The European Microscopy Congress (EMC) 2024 –to be held from Sunday 25th August to Friday 30th August - is the 17th of its kind and will bring the world of scientific imaging together in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities - Copenhagen, Denmark. This is the first in-person event in the series which occur every four years, following cancellation of the August 2020 event due to the pandemic and the subsequent Virtual Early Career Microscopy Congress which was held in November 2020. Incorporating a balanced conference program of all kinds of microscopy in both physical and life sciences - microscopists, manufacturers and suppliers will come together to share new techniques, applications and technology. The EMC2024 will take place at Bella Center, Center Boulevard 5, 2300 Copenhagen, and features pre-congress workshops on Sunday 25th August and an opening reception. Monday the 26th, Eva Olsson will give the opening address followed by the first plenary. The day will continue with 6 parallel sessions and will close with drinks in the Poster and Exhibition area. The last day of the Congress will conclude with a farewell reception. The exhibition is one the largest of its kind featuring more than 100 exhibitors. The Royal Microscopical Society (UK) will also be attending the Copenhagen event. The deadline for online registration is 27 July. EMC2024 is hosted by the Nordic Microscopy Society, SCANDEM and organised in collaboration with the PCO MCI Nordics.

  • Key appointments to drive drug discovery and trials
    Biopharmaceutical company Enterprise Therapeutics dedicated to the discovery and development of novel therapies to help people with respiratory disease, has appointed Dr Renu Gupta as CMO (Chief Medical Officer) and Dr Janet Hammond as a Non-Executive Director. Dr Gupta is a physician-scientist and industry leader, with more than 20 years of experience as a CMO, most recently at Promedior, Inc, a member of the Roche Group. For over  30 years she has held various roles within research and development, executive management and as a Board member, including at Global Bio-Pharma, Corbus Pharmaceuticals, Breath Therapeutics, Insmed, Inc, Novartis and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS). Dr Gupta has been instrumental in implementing clinical and regulatory strategies and development pathways to advance targets, forming productive private-public sector partnerships. With medical degrees from the University of Zambia, she completed her medical and post-doctoral training at Albert Einstein Medical Center, the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr Hammond has over 20 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry, during which time she has overseen the development and successful approval of several drugs. She is currently Chief Development Officer at Atea Pharmaceuticals, a Boston-based biotech focused on the development of antiviral drugs for life-threatening infectious diseases. Prior to joining Atea, Janet was Vice President and Head of Infectious Diseases and General Medicine at AbbVie, Inc, and Senior Vice President and Global Head of Infectious Diseases at Hoffmann-la Roche. She obtained her MD and PhD from the University of Cape Town where she specialised in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine, holds a Masters in Clinical Investigation from Johns Hopkins University and carried out training in Infectious Diseases at Duke and Johns Hopkins Universities. Dr John Ford, CEO, Enterprise Therapeutics, said: “We are delighted to welcome Renu as CMO and Janet to the Board. Renu’s successful track record in developing innovative respiratory medicines will be a great asset to the team, while Janet’s extensive experience in driving late-stage clinical development programmes will be an invaluable addition to the Board.   • UTHealth Houston researchers to study circadian link in severe headaches with $2.4M grant
    The link between severe headache disorders headaches and the body's circadian clock in pain timing and thresholds will be studied with a $2.4 million grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) to UTHealth Houston researchers. The research is led by two faculty members of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston: Mark Burish, MD, PhD, associate professor in the Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery, and Seung-Hee Yoo, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The study builds on earlier research by Burish and Yoo, funded by the Will Erwin Headache Research Foundation and published in 2023 in the journal Neurology, which revealed that both cluster headache and migraine are strongly linked to the internal clock that regulates body processes known as the circadian system. Burish and Yoo became interested in the topic of circadian clock regulation in headaches due to the clear circadian feature from cluster headache patients. Cluster headache, which affects 1 in 1,000 people, is an extremely painful disorder that carries a higher risk of suicidality than the general population and can severely impact a patient's quality of life. In the previous research, Burish and Yoo found that there was a circadian pattern of cluster headache attacks in more than 70% of participants, with a peak between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and seasonal peaks in spring and autumn. Both migraine and cluster headache, but cluster headache in particular, have an unusually circadian pattern of attacks. And several of the treatments for cluster headache and migraine, like steroids and melatonin, strongly influence the core molecular machinery of our body's internal clock. We thought that these links were interesting. With Dr. Burish's background in headaches and my background in circadian biology, we started to discuss new ways to study the circadian features of headaches." Seung-Hee Yoo, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston In a pre-clinical study by the team recently published in Headache, Yoo and Burish found a new circadian pattern of pain in a laboratory headache mouse model that involved nitroglycerin, a medication that can trigger cluster headaches and migraines in those patients. When the clock genes were genetically altered in this laboratory model, the circadian pattern of pain disappeared. Burish and Yoo believe this research, which was years in development through funding by the Will Erwin Headache Research Foundation, holds promise as a new model for studying the unusually circadian nature of these headaches. "The circadian aspect of cluster headache and migraine are fascinating – something seems to get activated at the same time every day," Burish said. "A goal of our research is to understand that activation, with the hopes of someday preventing these headaches from occurring. We are grateful to the Will Erwin Headache Research Foundation for giving us the type of long-term support needed to explore a new field of research, and are very happy to have now received funding from the NIH." Burish is also the director of the Will Erwin Headache Research Center at UTHealth Houston Neurosciences.
